TL;DR (the only paragraph that matters)
We don't store the articles you bonk. We don't track your browsing. We don't sell anything to anyone. The text of the page you simplify is processed in-memory and discarded the moment your simplified version comes back. That's the whole pitch — everything below is the long-form receipts.
Who we are
Bonkd is operated by an independent developer. For anything privacy-related — questions, deletion requests, "wait did you bonk my data" panic — email hello@bonkd.app.
What we do NOT collect
This is the section that actually matters. We do not collect:
- Your browsing history. We have no idea what tabs you open or what pages you read. Bonkd only sees a page when you explicitly click Simplify on it.
- Keystrokes, form input, cookies, or password fields. Bonkd never touches form data on any page. Ever.
- Full page HTML. We extract only the article body via Mozilla Readability — chrome, sidebars, ads, and (importantly) any embedded login state get stripped before anything leaves your browser.
- Analytics or device fingerprints. This website has no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no Mixpanel, no tracking pixels. Open the Network tab — there's nothing to see.
- Cookies. Zero. Neither the website nor the extension sets cookies for anything.
What we do collect
- Article text from pages you explicitly Simplify — one page at a time, only the article body (no HTML chrome, no form data).
- A stable install ID (UUID) generated by the extension on first run and stored locally in your browser (
chrome.storage.local). Sent with each request so we can count weekly usage against your free-tier quota. - Your IP address, visible to our server for the duration of each request, used for rate limiting and abuse detection.
- Your extension version and Chrome's User-Agent string, sent with each request for compatibility.
- Your Google account email and OpenID
sub— only if you sign in for the Pro tier. Used to match your account to your Stripe subscription.
Why we collect each item
| Item | Purpose | |---|---| | Article text | Process your simplification request via our proprietary AI model (hosted on Google AI services) | | Install ID | Count weekly free-tier usage (3 articles / week) | | IP address | Rate limiting and abuse detection | | Extension + Chrome version | Diagnose compatibility issues | | Google email / sub | Match Pro subscribers to Stripe records |
Sub-processors
We use four. That's it.
- Google AI services — runs the AI inference for our proprietary model. Article text is processed in-memory only — not stored on Google's servers and not used to train any AI model.
- Stripe — processes Pro subscription payments. Stripe holds your billing details; we never see card numbers.
- Google Cloud Run / Cloudflare — host the Bonkd API.
- Vercel — hosts this website.
Retention (how long we hold things)
- Article text: zero seconds. It gets bonked, simplified, returned, and dropped from memory in a single request cycle. We don't have it long enough to do anything with it even if we wanted to.
- Request logs (timestamp, install ID, byte size, response status — no text): at most 30 days for abuse detection, then deleted.
- Pro account records (Google email, subscription status): kept while your subscription is active and for 90 days after cancellation for tax/billing audit purposes.
Your rights
You can:
- Email hello@bonkd.app to delete records associated with your install ID or Pro account.
- Sign out of Pro in the side panel; this clears local session data immediately.
- Uninstall the extension at any time, which removes all locally-stored data (the install ID and any cached simplifications).

Children
Bonkd is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
